Thin Line Difference Between These Two...

Motivation V.S Inspiration

“Motivation is inner drive to fulfill goal. Inspiration is having a glimpse of who you really are.” -  Bambooforest.

Are you currently using motivation or are you allowing inspiration to use you?

There is a huge difference between the two and you will know which one is in charge. When inspiration is still present, you are naturally motivated and can achieve all things required. But when you resort to using your will to motivate yourself despite the writing on the wall, you will feel exhausted, worried, and overwhelmed. How is this?

Motivation is of the ego and Inspiration is of the soul.

The inspiration felt in the beginning disappears and motivation enters the scene. However, we tend to forget that things are not permanent and believe it will last forever, so when inspiration is gone, we resort to using our will to motivate ourselves.

Culturally I think, we are motivated but not inspired. We live our lives by motivation and wonder why we are so unhappy. Motivation forces us to keep up with others, compete against others, and measure ourselves to others.

I feel that many of us have been guilty of using motivation when we should've been waiting upon the soul to inspire our course of action. But oh no, we had to keep the momentum going. We weren't willing to just sit and wait for that moment; we have too much to do and no time to waste. This kind of urgency is not really being productive. In fact, it's depleting.

When motivation is running the show, the very thing that you are so desperate to accomplish becomes distorted in the process. You lose your passion and begin to question if you are doing the right thing or even if you're on the right path. Self-doubt creeps in and infects your plans, your intentions, and eventually the outcome.

There are various situations that continue to inspire us and help us to achieve our objectives in the optimum of our capacities. It enables us to work harder and create better opportunities that will shape our individual skills and practices. Due to this, we tend to showcase to others our capabilities while at the same time giving them the same opportunity to excel in their given responsibilities. In the end, it is a man’s mindset and motivation that continues to guide them towards their respective goals and interests.

I feel that to be inspired, the most important thing is the source of inspiration. This source can be another person, a song, a painting, a story, a photograph, or any other numerous things. There can be numerous examples for inspiration.

If a person is motivated, he will do that work with more effort and try to complete his goals before or on time. It is a desire or willingness; in short, the enthusiasm to achieve something. Motivation plays a vital role in the workplace. The company managers are the ones who motivate their employees or colleagues as team leader to reach their goals. An incentive is also something that motivates an individual to perform an action. They are just examples; otherwise, motivation is helpful and applicable in each and everything thing.

The interesting thing is that some people seem to mistake motivation for inspiration. They think that both words have the same meaning, and they often use one word for the other.

So, if you are to go and exercise, you must motivate yourself by reminding yourself of the motive for doing exercise. It could be weight loss, fitness, getting fresh air, etc. Whether you use the word “motive”, or you use the word “reason”, motivation needs to come from that source. Without having a reason or a motive, motivation will be hard to come by.

Inspiration on the other hand, is more of a process. You may hear a speaker who inspires you, you may read a book that inspires you, you may hear a song that inspires you, you may meet a person who inspires you, or you may see something that inspires you. Whatever it is that inspires you, it touches you on the inside and connects you to a state of being more excited, productive, purposeful, or anything that comes as a result of being inspired.

An example could be of Motivation – I must raise Rs. 10,000 for charity. They are in desperate need of funding because they need to get a new computer. To be able to afford the new computer, they need to raise Rs. 10,000 by the end of this month.

The ‘motive’ here is to make provision for the new computer. That is the pulling force that is making me raise money for charity.

Inspiration – I feel like helping the charity to raise funds. When I am contributing to others, I feel that I am in full alignment with my core values. The driving force here is to contribute towards others because it feels happy within to who I really am on the inside.

If inspiration is guiding your steps, then continue and be assured that the outcome will be magnificent. If on the other hand, motivation has become your compass then you need to stop, get quiet and wait upon the whisperings of the soul to spur and inspire you on.

So, gratitude can support you in feeling inspired and being motivated.
