On the occasion of 50th Anniversary
@EARTH DAY!

“Earth Day is a day of responsibility to our planet, responsibility to the people who inhabit it, to the nature itself, of which we are a part.”

S.P. Kapitsa (Physicist.)

Earth Day is an annual the event celebrated on April 22, worldwide by various activists, actors, scientists, teachers, and students. Also, the role of organizations like W.W.F, The Nature Conservancy, Oceana and the famous chime of World Peace Bell all in their way demonstrate support for environmental protection. Rachel Carson, a nature author, and former marine biologist who wrote her seminal book, Silent Spring, where she talked about the dangers of pesticides especially DDT (Dichloro Diphenyl Trichloroethane) which one spring made all sparrows disappear is also worth- mentioning. The Earth Day gives every inhabitant in all the populated corners of the world the opportunity to express gratitude to planet Earth.

In the northern hemisphere, Earth Day is observed in the spring, and in the Southern Hemisphere – in the autumn.

This year, Earth shared with us, that still, most of the efforts from human beings are of superficial value. Misuse so far was mistaken by human beings as use of Nature for betterment. Discovery and a chain of discoveries somewhere disturbed the process of recovery. Claiming more and more land in name of progress, in one jolt, Earth has recently reclaimed a lot back.

We are born to Mother Earth and will vanish in her, not in millions but in infinite numbers.

Should then the Earth still not get her due?

Let me begin by remembering some eminent personalities connected to Earth Day.

The United States Senator Gaylord Nelson, U Thant, the Secretary-General of United Nations at that time and Denis Hayes. John McConnell, in 1960, came up with the name and concept at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco to celebrate Earth Day.

Would we quickly like to go through our misdeeds, the cluttering of the soil cover with household and industrial wastes, scattered in forest tracts, along roadsides, in ditches and this the volume of waste, steadily growing, not processed, but exported to landfills. We are also responsible for the extinction of animals due to deforestation and the pollution of water bodies.

Respiratory issues in human beings ring a bell these days but it has been a problem that Earth was reminding us for a long time.

On that note, let me bring up just 5 important steps that I wish to take up, hoping that at least 5 more will try to do this earnestly too, followed by 5 more and more…

They also have an Earth Challenge 2020.

·       Keeping my surroundings clean by figuring out how to manage the trash.

·       Try to find out people who may need stuff that is in good condition and is just lying around in my room.

·       Save Water, Save misuse of electrical gadgets, Save Fuel.

·       Respect the laws.

·       Educate all about the variety of species and to understand how connected and interdependent we are on this Earth.

Thirsty for more and have more time at hand, today then read further…

Some Earth Day Facts-

·       Earth Day Flag is called Ecology Flag. It was created by cartoonist Ron Cobb and was first published in the Los Angeles Free Press on 7 November 1969. The Ecology symbol resembles Greek letter theta and is a combination of the letters “E” and “O” taken from the words “Environment” and “Organism,” respectively. The flag consists of thirteen alternating-green-and-whites’ stripes with the symbol on the left-hand side.

·       Earth Day Anthem is a universal song associated with Earth Day. Its lyrics are set to the tone of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” melody on which the official anthem of the European Union is based.

  • On Earth Day 2009, Disney released a documentary film called Earth that followed the migration paths of four animal families.

  • On the very first Earth Day, 20 million people gathered in the streets of America to protest the industrial revolution. An environmental movement was born as a result.

  • In an Earth Day celebration in 2011, 28 million trees were planted in Afghanistan by the Earth Day Network.

  • In Panama, 100 endangered species of orchids were planted and maintained to prevent their extinction in honor of Earth Day.
