Tāṇḍavam also is known as Tāṇḍava Natyam is a divine dance performed by the Hindu God Shiva. So, dance is the manifestation of primal rhythmic energy.

29th April, this day acts as a wake-up call for many institutions that have not yet recognized the value of dance as an art form. It is a celebration day for those who can see its value and importance.

Except for the Pappu of Indian movie songs who cannot dance sala or maybe can do only salsa, as far as globally celebrated events are concerned, this is one of the most anticipated one by creatives around the world. Everyone can dance, only some feel shy that also if being watched. The art of dance can be traced back at least 9,000 years to ancient Indian paintings, while ceremonial dances appeared in many other ancient cultures. It has been a central ingredient in human life ever since, with everyone, from tribespeople to professional entertainers showcasing their talents.

International Dance Day was introduced by UNESCO partner and NGO Conseil International de la Dance (CID), France, in 1982. The fact that April 29 happens to be the birth anniversary of the world-famous French dancer and ballet master Jean-Georges Noverre is purely coincidental, but such serendipity lends an added sheen to the day and its celebrations, nevertheless.

Various forms of Dances are performed all over the world for various purposes. However, in present times too, in many countries dance is looked upon as just a hobby or a way to pass time and there are very few who take up the art form as a career or follow it with persistent passion. The events on this day, dedicated to dance, are intended to focus on the significance of dance while providing an opportunity for professional dancers themselves to reaffirm their decision of dedicating their lives to dance and spreading the word.

Not to forget dancing is a microcosm of social construct, dancers of the world feel a connect, irrespective of race, religion, or country coming in the way. The intention of the International Dance Day Message is to celebrate dance, revel in the universality of this art form, cross all political, cultural, and ethnic barriers, and bring people together with a common language - dance.

On or around 29th April, various Dance Companies, Amateur Groups, Schools, Associations, and other Dance Organisations organizes various events which are primarily organized jointly with Non-Dance Institutions such as a Government Agency, Public School, Municipality, Business Enterprise, Trade Union, etc. The event at UNESCO is organized in partnership with World Dance Alliance Europe.

How can I end without mentioning the grace in animals and birds especially the peacocks who dance in full glory when Nature gives them what they seek! Before others make you dance to their tunes, figure out what makes you dance.

Happy International Dance Day @ Ananda!
